JOB SUMMARY

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation (BON) is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the full-time position of Grant Proposal Writer.  Working under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the main responsibility for the Grant Proposal Writer is to write proposals to secure funding for Brokenhead Ojibway Nation projects and services from government agencies, foundations, and other granting entities.  They will specialize in understanding the needs and objectives of various funding sources and tailoring proposals to the needs and goals of BON.

The Grant Proposal Writer will work closely with program managers and financial staff to develop a comprehensive understanding of the project or service for which funding is sought.  They will gather all the necessary information about the project, including its objectives, target audience, budget, timeline, and expected outcomes.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Exceptional cultural sensitivity in working with First Nations Peoples and governments
  • Meeting with organization leaders to understand the objectives, programs, and financial needs
  • Proactively identify the needs of the organization as a whole, and identify funding gaps, on an ongoing basis
  • Coordinating with financial and program departments to gather necessary information and data
  • Research and identify potential sources of grant funding
  • Write, edit, and submit professional and impactful grant proposals
  • Follow all formatting and submission guidelines set by the grant-awarding organization
  • Track and manage proposals, from their initial stages to their final submissions
  • Prepare progress reports for senior management and funders when required
  • Maintain proficient knowledge of organization’s history and programs
  • Reviewing the terms and conditions of all awarded grants to ensure compliance
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Politically and culturally sensitive and has an awareness of BON values, culture, and traditions
  • Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, creative writing, journalism, communication, English or related field
  • Proven work experience as a Grant Proposal Writer or similar role
  • Excellent knowledge of funding opportunities, including Federal and Provincial government initiatives aimed at capacity building for First Nations
  • Excellent written communication skills to create clear, concise, and persuasive proposals
  • Research skills to identify potential grant opportunities and thoroughly understand the goals, mission, and funding needs of the organization
  • Strong analytical skills to understand and interpret complex grant guidelines and requirements
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality work
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple proposals at a time, ensuring each is tailored to the specific grant and organization
  • Excellent attention to detail to ensure all components of each grant proposal are completed according to grant guidelines
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders, gathering necessary information and feedback for proposals
  • Financial knowledge to develop and present budgets within the grant proposals
  • Ability to follow up on submitted proposals and provide necessary information to potential funders
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Willing to submit a pre-employment drug test
